PMMA (polymethyl Methacrylate) is the material typically used for producing denture bases. The general composition of PMMA is covered, including the three stages of the addition polymerisation reaction; initiation, propagation and termination. It is important to understand the mechanical properties of PMMA to confirm it is appropriate for use. Heraeus Kulzer Pal 20, a heat cure acrylic; Heraeus Kulzer PalaXpress, an injection molded acrylic; Vertex Self-cure, a cold cure acrylic; and Dentsply Lucitone 119, a high impact heat cure acrylic are each briefly discussed and Vertex Castapress; a low monomer cold cure acrylic is discussed in more detail.
